Sand Equivalent Test Set

The Sand Equivalent Test Set is used to determine the relevant proportions of detrimental fines in granular materials such as soils, sands, and fine aggregates. The sand equivalent test measures the cleanliness and quality of the materials, particularly in applications where cleanliness and the absence of fines are required, such as in pavement construction. The apparatus consists of a graduated plastic cylinder, a stock solution, a weighted foot assembly, a funnel, and a rubber stopper. During the test, a sample of the material is mixed with a solution containing a flocculating agent, which causes the fine particles to settle out. The height of the settled material is then measured against the total height of the solution in the cylinder, providing a ratio known as the sand equivalent. Higher sand equivalent values indicate cleaner materials with fewer detrimental fines.

Features of Sand Equivalent Test Set

  • Graduated Plastic Cylinder: The cylinder allows for precise measurement of the settled material and the sand equivalent stock solution, enabling accurate calculation of the sand equivalent value.
  • Stock Solution: The provided stock solution serves as a reference material against which the test sample is compared, ensuring consistent and reliable results.
  • Weighted Foot Assembly: The weighted foot assembly applies a standardized pressure to the sample during agitation, ensuring uniform testing conditions across different samples.
  • Funnel: The funnel facilitates the addition of the test sample and the flocculating solution, ensuring proper mixing and settling of the sample during the test.
  • Rubber Stopper: The rubber stopper seals the top of the cylinder, preventing any spillage or contamination during the test procedure.
  • Flocculating Agent: The solution containing a flocculating agent aids in the separation of fine particles from the test sample, allowing for an accurate assessment of the cleanliness of the material.

Standard: ASTM D2419, AASHTO T176

ASTM D2419: Standard Test Method for Sand Equivalent Value of Soils and Fine Aggregate, provides procedures for determining the sand equivalent value of soils and fine aggregates. The sand equivalent value is a measure of the relative cleanliness of fine aggregates compared to a known reference material. Higher sand equivalent values indicate cleaner materials with fewer detrimental fines.

AASHTO T176: Standard Method of Test for Plastic Fines in Graded Aggregates and Soils by Use of the Sand Equivalent Test, specifically endorsed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). It provides a method for determining the plastic fines in graded aggregates and soils using the sand equivalent test.

Test Procedure of Sand Equivalent Test Set

  • Prepare the Test Sample: Obtain a representative sample of the material to be tested, usually sand or fine aggregate. Ensure that the sample is oven-dried and free from any contaminants.
  • Setup the Sand Equivalent Test Set: Set up the apparatus by placing the graduated plastic cylinder on a stable surface. Make sure the cylinder is clean and dry. Fill the cylinder with the sand equivalent stock solution up to the graduated mark.
  • Prepare the Test Sample: Weigh out a specific amount of the prepared test sample and place it into the funnel of the Sand Equivalent Test Apparatus. The weight of the sample depends on the specific requirements of the standard being followed.
  • Add the Flocculating Solution: Add the required amount of calcium chloride solution to the test sample in the funnel. This solution will cause the fine particles in the sample to settle out.
  • Start the Test: Lower the weighted foot assembly onto the surface of the sample in the funnel and secure it in place. Start the shaking mechanism or manually agitate the assembly for a specific duration, typically about 45 seconds.
  • Measure the Results: After shaking, allow the contents of the funnel to settle for a specific period, usually about 10 minutes. Measure and record the height of the settled material and the height of the sand equivalent stock solution in the graduated cylinder.
  • Calculate the Sand Equivalent Value: Calculate the sand equivalent value using the formula provided in the relevant standard. Typically, it involves dividing the height of the settled material by the height of the sand equivalent stock solution and multiplying by 100.
  • Interpret the Results: Compare the calculated sand equivalent value to the specified requirements or standards to determine the cleanliness and quality of the test sample. Higher sand equivalent values indicate cleaner materials with fewer detrimental fines
