Vicat Apparatus

The Vicat Apparatus is used to determine the setting time and consistency of cement paste, mortar, and concrete. The apparatus consists of a plunger, a mold, and a measuring device.

The test involves placing a cement sample in the mold and applying a standard plunger to create an indentation in the sample. The setting time is determined by measuring the depth of penetration of the plunger over time. This helps engineers and researchers understand the characteristics of cementitious materials and ensures that they meet specified standards for construction projects.

The vicat frame consists essentially of a metal stand with a sliding rod. An adjustable indicator moves over a graduated scale. The needle or plunger is attached to the bottom end of the rod to make up the test weight of 300 g. The frame is supplied with basic BS EN accessories.

Features of Vicat Apparatus

  • Metal Stand with Sliding Rod: The frame of the Vicat apparatus is usually made of metal and includes a sliding rod mechanism. This rod allows for precise adjustment of the position of the plunger or needle.
  • Adjustable Indicator: An indicator is attached to the sliding rod, which moves over a graduated scale. This indicator allows for accurate measurement of the depth of penetration of the plunger into the cement sample.
  • Plunger: The bottom end of the sliding rod is attached to a plunger. This component applies a standard test weight (typically 300 g) to create an indentation in the cement sample.
  • Graduated Scale: The frame includes a graduated scale against which the indicator moves. This scale is typically marked in millimeters and allows for precise measurement of the depth of penetration.
  • Compliance with Standards: The Vicat Apparatus is supplied with basic BS EN (British Standard European Norm) accessories, ensuring compliance with industry standards for testing cementitious materials.

Standard

  1. BS EN 196-3: This standard specifies the method for determining the setting times of cement by the Vicat apparatus. It provides guidelines for conducting tests to measure the consistency and setting time of cement paste, mortar, and concrete using the Vicat Apparatus. The standard outlines the procedure for preparing the test specimens, conducting the test, and calculating the setting times based on the measurements obtained.

  2. BS EN 480-2: This standard pertains to the determination of the setting time of hydraulic cement, including Portland cement, using the Vicat apparatus. It provides detailed procedures for conducting the test, including the preparation of test specimens, the operation of the Vicat apparatus, and the measurement of setting times. Additionally, BS EN 480-2 may cover supplementary methods or modifications to the Vicat test procedure outlined in BS EN 196-3 for specific types of cement or testing conditions.

Test Procedure of Vicat Apparatus

  1. Sample Preparation:

    • Prepare the cementitious material according to the specifications of the standard being followed (e.g., BS EN 196-3 or BS EN 480-2).
    • Mix the material thoroughly to ensure uniformity.
  2. Preparation of Test Specimens:

    • Fill the mold of the Vicat Apparatus with the prepared cementitious material.
    • Compact the material within the mold to remove any voids or air bubbles and ensure even distribution.
  3. Setting Up the Apparatus:

    • Set up the Vicat frame on a stable surface.
    • Attach the plunger or needle to the bottom end of the sliding rod.
    • Adjust the indicator over the graduated scale to zero or the starting point.
  4. Conducting the Test:

    • Place the filled mold containing the cementitious material under the plunger of the Vicat Apparatus.
    • Lower the plunger gently onto the surface of the material until it makes contact.
    • Release the plunger and start the timer.
    • At regular intervals, lower the plunger onto the material and measure the depth of penetration using the graduated scale or other measuring device provided with the apparatus.
    • Continue this process until the penetration depth reaches a specified value or until the material shows signs of initial setting, such as resisting penetration.
  5. Recording Data:

    • Record the time taken for the plunger to penetrate to the specified depth or for the material to show the initial setting.
    • Note any observations regarding the behavior of the material during the test, such as changes in consistency or resistance to penetration.
